In 1963, WWE Hall of Famer Buddy Rogers became the first person to successfully defend his title. The date of April 25, 1963 is considered by WWE to be the beginning of the first reign and the foundation of the title. Roman Reigns, the current undisputed WWE Universal Champion, is the current holder of the title, and there have been a total of 144 other title reigns between Shawn Rogers and Roman Reigns.
Today marks the beginning of WWE Championship Week, which is being held to commemorate the 60th year of the WWE Championship.
The week-long celebration on social media begins with a look at the 30 greatest WWE Title changes in history, which can be found by clicking here. You can also get more information about the celebration here. The celebration will continue throughout the week with special editions of WWE Top 10 and WWE Playlist, unique video segments, never-before-seen pictures, and other content, among other things.
"In the decades that followed Rogers' pivotal achievement, as WWE expanded from being a regional operation to becoming the global phenomenon that it is today, the WWE Championship remained a constant. "It has stood alone as the ultimate prize to all Superstars, a coveted distinction reserved for only the best of the best," WWE stated. "Its titleholders have included luminaries such as John Cena, 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin, and Bruno Sammartino."
