Lindsay Lohan made an attempt to file a lawsuit, against Rockstar Game, on a character in Grand Theft Auto V, that supposedly resembled her.
The former Disney actress was convinced that Lacey Jonas, a prominent character in the game, was based on her.
Not only did Lohan feel that the character, Lacey, looked and sounded just like her, but she also stated that the character wore clothing that were similar to her own and had a similar voice.
The actress filed her first lawsuit against Rockstar Games in 2014, saying that the developers had stolen everything from her "persona", to her smartphone, to her "signature peace sign" posture.
Additionally, her legal team stated that Rockstar had used an image of Lohan wearing a bikini from the year 2007.
In Grand Theft Auto V, players first see Lacey Jonas while she is attempting to conceal herself from the journalists in an alleyway.
She requests for a ride home, during which she reveals that she is "very famous," that she has appeared in a couple rom-coms and cheerleading movies, and that she is the "voice of a generation."
However, contrary to what she may lead you to believe, Lacey is not quite the international celebrity who lives a jet-setting lifestyle.
In point of fact, she is somewhat of a has-been who has become a target for journalists and seems to be suffering with the decline of her fame.
Therefore, in spite of the fact that Lohan's career was in decline at the time, it was puzzling as to why she would have publicly linked herself to a character such as Lacey.
In 2016, a panel of five judges ruled against Lohan, telling her that she did not have a claim on her hands and that her lawsuit should be dismissed.
However, the actress and her legal team submitted an appeal, which was ultimately denied once again in 2018.
In spite of the fact that the appeal judges agreed with Lohan's contention that a character in a video game might be regarded a "portrait," which would have provided support for her invasion of privacy claim, there simply weren't enough similarities between the actor and Lacey to warrant a finding that the lacey was a resemblance of Lindsay Lohan.
The character of Lacey Jonas was discussed by a panel of six judges from the New York Court of Appeals, and they came to the conclusion that she merely resembled a "generic lady without any special distinguishing physical attributes."
In his judgement, one of the judges, Eugene, said that "[the] artistic renderings are hazy, satirical portrayals of the manner, appearance, and persona of a contemporary, beach-going young lady... that is not identifiable as plaintiff."
At the time, neither Lohan nor Take-Two Interactive, the company that owns Rockstar, had any comment on the verdict.
As of the year 2022, Grand Theft Auto V has surpassed 170 million copies sold, making it the all-time best-selling console and PC game combined.
It set a record for the quickest time it took an entertainment release to generate $1 billion across all types of mediums.
