A recently released film on World War II has swiftly become a favourite among users of Netflix, as evidenced by the fact that it is already the top movie on the streaming site in multiple countries.
Narvik, which was made available on Netflix on January 23rd, has been a huge success with viewers all over the world and has already taken the number one slot in the countries of Sweden, Belgium, and Denmark.
The events of the Norwegian play take place in 1940 and centre on the rural community of Narvik, which serves as the principal supplier of iron ore to Nazi Germany.
The events depicted in the film Narvik are based on those that took place in real life during the Battle of Narvik, in which Norwegian forces, along with those of the British and French, gave Hitler his first setback by retaking the town from him.
When the Second World War broke out in September 1939, Norway had first declared that it would maintain its neutrality; nonetheless, the country was quickly invaded by Nazi Germany.
The main characters of the movie are the members of the Tofte family, particularly Gunnar and Ingrid, who find themselves in the midst of the war that is being fought between the Allied Forces and Germany.
Since it was made available to the public, Narvik has been met with universal acclaim and praise.
One audience member commented that a good real story movie could be made on the German attack on the village of Narvik because it was Hitler's first loss.
Someone else pointed out: "A riveting and heartbreaking look at one of the earliest conflicts of World War II, which appears to have been the most significant fight Norway has ever seen [...] The film is beautifully produced and wonderfully written, and it features intense battle [action] moments as well as teachings and ideas to reflect over."
While a third commented, "It's compelling, compact, and action-packed, a thriller that begins with testy negotiations and tense stand-offs in the Norwegian port city where Swedish ore was being shipped to both the Germans and the Brits, showing us the difference between Norwegians who chose to surrender in order to'save the town' and those who chose to fight."
M.N. Miller, writing for Ready Steady Cut, referred to the movie as a "beautiful looking war film that is naturally engaging and does an above-average job playing up the moral difficulties." He said that the movie "does an above-average job playing up the moral dilemmas."
This Nordic outing is only one of Netflix's most recent hits in the war picture genre, as All Quiet on the Western Front, which was released on October 28, 2022, has won nine nominations for an upcoming Oscar award ceremony.
The movie, which tells the story of German soldiers fighting in World War I and is competing for multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best International Feature, follows German soldiers as they fight in the heat of combat.
